Dubai’s airport is huge, so much that it has the World’s largest terminal. So it can be really good for a stopover when we have to wait many hours or it can become a true torture when we have almost no-time to change planes.

When we were choosing our flights to Bali, Emirates offered two options: a 8-hour stopover or a 1-hour layover. The choice wasn’t obvious for me at first, but then I thought that, after a 7-hour flight, we wouldn’t have much energy for spending the night at the airport, so I chose the short layover.

And so the drama began. I started looking for information about the airport, about the terminal, experiences from other travelers… and everybody agreed that a layover in Dubai lasting less than two hours and a half was almost a suicide mission. Panic. Alarms on. I’ve never missed a flight (I know it’s not a big deal, but I have my pride) and I didn’t want this time to be the firs one since I had everything well planned. So an hour before landing in Dubai, the stress started.

We landed a little earlier than expected, which gave us more time. Anyway, we had to move to another zone in order to find our new gate so we had no time to spare. Let’s say that, the moment my feet touched the ground of that airport, I channeled my inner rugby player… Fixed course, constant speed and no obstacle that could stop me. We followed the airport signs moving as fast as possible, we passed through the new security control, we jumped on the “subway” that connect the zones and… in 20 minutes we had reached our gate. I know, totally unnecessary drama. We even had time to eat something before the boarding time.

By the way, after all that, I found out that Emirates offers a special service for short layovers to guide you through Dubai’s airport so that you find your new gate in time. Ten points for me.

In summary, here are my recommendations for Dubai’s airport, Emirates’ terminal 3 and short layovers:

• Ask for the special service I mentioned. Don’t be like me, I’m sure I was so stressed that I just didn’t see it.
• Don’t let the situation overwhelm you. I know short layovers are not always cool, but it’s not impossible to make it to your gate in time.
• Emirates’ staff is really nice, if you have doubts, just ask them!
• Try to avoid cumbersome clothing (belts, boots, jewelry…). Keep in mind that you’ll probably have to pass through a security control before taking your next plane (depending on your final destination) so the less time you lose, the better.
• Terminal 3 is huge but everything is perfectly signposted and you’ll find staff members in every corner. Getting lost is not easy!

El aeropuerto de Dubai es enorme, tanto, que alberga en su interior la terminal más grande del mundo. Así que hacer escala en este aeropuerto puede ser una bendición, cuando son muchas horas, o convertirse en una auténtica tortura cuando vamos con el tiempo justo.

En nuestro viaje a Bali, Emirates nos ofrecía dos opciones: o bien una escala de más de 8 h. o bien una de 1.05 h. En un principio, no tenía muy claro por qué opción decantarme, pero supuse que después de un vuelo de 7 horas, no nos iba a apetecer mucho estar tanto tiempo en un aeropuerto, así que elegí la escala corta.

Y ahí empezó el drama. Me puse a buscar información sobre el aeropuerto, sobre la terminal, experiencias de otros viajeros… y todo el mundo coincidía en que hacer una escala de menos de dos horas y media en ese aeropuerto era una misión suicida. Pánico. Alarmas activadas. Nunca he perdido un avión (sé que no es para tanto, pero ya es una cuestión de orgullo) y no me haría ilusión perderlo en un viaje que llevaba tan planificado. Así que una hora antes de aterrizar en Dubai empecé a estresarme 

Aterrizamos un poco antes de tiempo, lo que nos dio algo más de margen. De todas formas, teníamos que cambiar de zona para llegar a la puerta de embarque de nuestro siguiente vuelo, así que no había tiempo que perder. Digamos que en cuanto me bajé del avión dejé salir al jugador de rugby que vive en mi interior… Rumbo fijo, velocidad constante y sin obstáculos que pudieran frenarme. Seguimos las señales del aeropuerto lo más rápido posible, pasamos el nuevo control, nos subimos al “metro” que conecta las dos zonas y… en unos 20 minutos habíamos llegado a la puerta de embarque. Vamos, un drama totalmente innecesario. Incluso tuvimos tiempo de comer algo antes de subir al avión.

Por cierto, luego me enteré de que Emirates tiene un servicio especial en el aeropuerto de Dubai para llevarte desde donde aterrizas hasta tu nueva puerta de embarque en escalas cortas. Diez puntos para mí.

En resumen, estos serían mis consejos sobre el aeropuerto de Dubai, la terminal 3 de Emirates y las escalas cortas:

• Pregunta por el servicio especial nada más llegar. No hagas como yo, que iba tan estresada que, seguramente, pasé de largo.
• No te agobies, ir con poco tiempo nunca mola, pero lo tienen organizado para que llegues sin problema.
• El personal de Emirates suele ser muy majo, si tienes cualquier duda, ¡pregunta!
• Si puedes, evita llevar ropa demasiado engorrosa (cinturones, botas, joyas…). Recuerda que en la escala tendrás que pasar otro control (dependiendo del país al que viajes) y cuanto menos tiempo pierdas, mejor.
• La terminal 3 es muy grande, pero todo está perfectamente señalizado y hay personal en cada esquina. ¡Es muy difícil perderse!
