If you are planning a trip to Lanzarote, I’m sure you already have a visit on your list: the Timanfaya National Park.

The volcanic eruptions that occured between 1730 and 1824 shaped this incredible place making it look like it was pulled straight out of a sci-fi movie.

But, what do you need to know before visiting Timanfaya? Here are my top tips to make your visit perfect.

How to arrive to Timanfaya.

Mi first and numer one tip to get to this National Park but also to move around Lanzarote is: rent a car. There are lots of companies that offer this sevice, you can check out the options online (wich I highly recommend) or rent it once you’ve arrived to the island.

To get to Timanfaya you’ll have to head to el Islote de Hilario, there you’ll find a parking. The entrance it’s perfectly indicated with wooden signs with the shape of a devil. Once you are inside, the staff will tell you where to park and you’ll be a few steps away from the start of the route.

The tickets.

Before entering the parking, a staff member will approach to your car and hand you a map with tourist information. Also, they will give you the tickets for the park (10€ per person).

You can buy combined tickets valid for several tourist points of the island. If you are planning to visit los Jameos del Agua or la Cueva de los Verdes, for example, these combined tickets may be a good option.

The Park.

One of the most important things you should know before visiting the Timanfaya National Park is that you can not visit the place by yourself. You will jump into a bus and make a guided route (audio provided in Spanish, English and German) through the Park.  In my opinion, you get the best views from the right side of the bus (to avoid confussions, by right side I mean the side where the door is).

Besides the bus route, you can enjoy some geothermic demonstrations at the park. You’ll be always guided by a member of the staff during this part.

Inside the park there’s also a restaurant where they cook the food using the natural heat of the floor. We didn’t try it, but it has some amazing views for sure!

And, even though this is not a popular fact, I’m going to share a nice secret with you: there’s a public barbecue in the park that uses the same sistem as the restaurant. If you are up for a wild picnic, you can totally use it to heat your food. It’s near the demonstration area but, if you don’t find it, you can totally ask a staff member and they will show you where it is no problem!

Si estás pensando en visitar Lanzarote, seguramente haya un lugar que esté en tu lista al 100%: el Parque Nacional de Timanfaya.

Las erupciones volcánicas ocurridas entre 1730 y 1824 han dado forma a este increíble lugar que parece sacado directamente de una película de ciencia ficción.

Pero, ¿qué necesitas saber antes de visitar Timanfaya? Aquí te dejo unos cuantos puntos a tener en cuenta para sacar partido a tu visita.

Cómo llegar a Timanfaya.

La recomendación número 1, tanto para llegar a este Parque Nacional como para recorrer la isla de Lanzarote es, sin duda, alquilar un coche. Hay infinidad de compañías que ofrecen este servicio, lo podéis hacer por internet (es lo más recomendable para asegurar la disponibilidad) o una vez en la isla.

Para llegar a Timanfaya, tendréis que dirigiros al estacionamiento del Islote de Hilario. Veréis la entrada perfectamente indicada por unos carteles de madera con un diablo. Una vez allí, el personal os indicará dónde aparcar y estaréis a pocos metros del inicio del recorrido.

Antes de acceder al parking, un miembro del personal se acercará a entregaros un mapa de la isla con información turística y os cobrarán la entrada, que es de 10€ por persona.

También existen entradas combinadas para varias atracciones de la isla. Si estáis pensando en visitar los Jameos del Agua o la Cueva de los Verdes, seguramente os compense haceros con uno de estos “packs”.

El Parque.

Una de las principales cosas que debes saber si vas a visitar el Parque Nacional de Timanfaya es que no se puede recorrer a pie. La visita se realiza en unos autobuses que salen cada 15 minutos aproximadamente y llevan una audioguía en castellano, inglés y alemán que va explicando la historia del Parque. En mi opinión, las mejores vistas se tienen en la parte derecha del autobús (para evitar confusiones, con la derecha me refiero a la fila que está en el lado de la puerta de acceso).

Aparte de la ruta en autobús, en el parque podréis disfrutar de una serie de demostraciones geotérmicas en las que siempre estaréis acompañados por un guía.

Dentro del parque también hay un restaurante en el que los alimentos se cocinan empleando el calor natural que emerge del subsuelo. Nosotros no lo probamos pero, desde luego, ¡tiene unas vistas impresionantes!

Además, aunque muy poca gente lo sabe, dentro del parque hay una barbacoa como la que emplea el restaurante pero de uso público. Si os animáis a hacer un picnic, está a vuestra disposición para cocinar lo que queráis. ¡El personal os indicará dónde se encuentra sin problema!
